How Your Calligraphy Artwork Can Be Displayed
Choose the format that fits your space and lifestyle.
Every calligraphy piece is created by hand using ink and brush. But beyond the writing itself, an important question many collectors ask is:
“When I receive the artwork, how can I display it at home?”
Here are the different formats you can choose from — depending on your space, aesthetic, and how much involvement you’d like after receiving the piece.
Option 1 — Professional Framing (Xuan Paper)
This is the most traditional paper used in Chinese calligraphy: Xuan paper (rice paper).
It is soft, highly absorbent, and alive with ink. This beauty also means it cannot be displayed properly without mounting. The artwork needs to be professionally mounted before framing to prevent wrinkles, bending, or damage over time. Read more: Why Mounting Matters for Calligraphy.
The result is a museum-style presentation with elegant mat borders.
Best for: collectors, large statement pieces, gallery-style display, long-term preservation
* If you are based in Melbourne, I can help arrange professional mounting and framing for you after the artwork is completed.

Option 2 — Traditional Scroll Mounting (Xuan Paper)
This is how calligraphy has been preserved and displayed for over a thousand years.
The artwork is mounted with silk borders and wooden rods, turning it into a hanging scroll. Read more: Why Mounting Matters for Calligraphy.
It can be hung on the wall when displayed, and rolled up for storage when not in use.
Best for: cultural appreciation, collectors, traditional aesthetic, a meaningful heirloom piece

Option 3 — Ready to Frame (Card Paper)
This option is written on thick, high-quality card paper.
It is the simplest and most convenient choice. Once you receive the artwork, you can purchase any frame from IKEA or a home store and frame it yourself — no special treatment required.
Best for: modern homes, gifts, people who want a hassle-free option, easy international shipping
Option 4 — Canvas
The calligraphy is written directly on canvas and stretched over a wooden frame, just like an oil painting.
It arrives ready to hang. No framing needed.
This is a rare and modern presentation style for calligraphy that fits beautifully into contemporary interiors.
Best for: modern homes, large wall pieces, minimalist interiors, immediate display

Option 5 — Wood / Object-Based Works
These works explore calligraphy beyond paper: onto wood, plaques, and other natural surfaces.
Each piece responds directly to the texture, grain, and imperfections of the material. Instead of being written on a blank surface, the brush interacts with something already alive, creating a dialogue between ink and matter.
Every wooden piece is unique. The natural structure of the material means no two works can ever be repeated.
Best for: statement wall pieces, interior design with natural materials, meaningful names, words, or phrases with presence, collectors looking for one-of-a-kind objects

Option 6 — Experimental / Large-Scale Surfaces
This category explores calligraphy as a living practice rather than a fixed medium.
Here, ink is not limited to paper. It can move across surfboards, architectural surfaces, installations, and custom large-scale objects.
These works are created as site-specific or collaboration-based pieces, where the surface, environment, and intention all shape the final result.
Each project is different. Some are bold and expressive. Others are minimal and quiet. The common thread is experimentation, allowing calligraphy to exist in unexpected contexts. This is where tradition meets contemporary expression, where calligraphy leaves the page and enters the world.
Best for: brand collaborations, spatial installations, surfboards, boards, and custom objects, public or event-based artworks, experimental art commissions
Why Mounting Matters for Calligraphy Paper
Unlike prints or posters, traditional calligraphy is created on highly sensitive paper using liquid ink. A finished calligraphy artwork is only truly complete after proper mounting.
Mounting is not just for aesthetics. It is essential for preservation, structural support, long-term display and respecting the nature of the materials
After Mounting
Mounted to support the paper, protect the ink: transformed into a finished piece suitable for framing or hanging.

Before Mounting
Fragile, flexible, and sensitive to ink and humidity: in its natural working state, but not yet ready for display.
